NFL STACKS DECK AGAINST SKINS DOWN THE STRETCH

Two late-season games against the Dallas Cowboys - including Thanksgiving Day from Texas Stadium - headline the Washington Redskins' 1996 schedule, released Wednesday by the NFL.

The scheduling office must think the Redskins could make a second-half charge towards their first playoff berth since the 1992 season. Six of Washington's final nine games are against 1995 playoff participants Indianapolis, Buffalo, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Dallas (twice).

Other than the holiday matchup in Dallas, the remainder of the Redskins' games will be played on Sundays - the third consecutive season Washington has been excluded from ABC's Monday Night Football. The Sept. 29 home game against the New York Jets will be seen at 8 p.m. on TNT. The schedule:

Sept. 1: Philadelphia, 1 p.m.; 8: Chicago, 1 p.m.; 15: at New York Giants, 4 p.m.; 22; at St. Louis, 1 p.m.; 29: New York Jets, 8 p.m.

Oct. 13: at New England, 1 p.m.; 20: New York Giants, 1 p.m.; 27: Indianapolis, 1 p.m.

Nov. 3: at Buffalo, 4 p.m.; 10: Arizona, 1 p.m.; 17: at Philadelphia, 1 p.m.; 24: San Francisco, 1 p.m.; 28: at Dallas, 4 p.m.

Dec. 8: at Tampa Bay, 1 p.m.; 15: at Arizona, 4 p.m.; 22: Dallas, 4 p.m.

The Redskins have yet to release their preseason schedule. Unlike last year, they will play a preseason game at home, against Cincinnati. Date and time haven't been set.

CATCHING UP: Sixth-round pick Kelvin Kinney out of Virginia State, was coveted by Dallas, San Diego and New England, in addition to Washington. ``They wanted to draft him in the seventh rouund, that's when the surprises are taken,'' Casserly said. ``We wanted to make sure we had him before then.'' Kinney surprised some people when he denied he was the youngest of 10 chilren, as listed on the bio distributed by Virginia State. He's actually the youngest of eight children. The number 10 comes into use because his parents have taken to including their two godchildren as family members, even though they don't live with the Kinneys. . . . Jeremy Asher won't be the only linebacker the Redskins look to sign between now and training camp. ``We're going to look long and hard at the position,'' linebackers coach Mike Haluchak said. ``We need youth in the backup spots. The youngest starter the Redskins have at that position is Marvcus Patton, soon to be 29. . . . Casserly says the Redskins aren't done in the free-agent market. A veteran defensive end would be highest on their wish list. by CNB
