2 MEN'S BODIES WASH UP, AT WATERSIDE, FISHING PIER

Two bodies were pulled from the water two hours apart Thursday in separate locations - one behind Waterside and one off Harrison's Fishing Pier.

A passerby spotted the first body just before 11:30 a.m. in the Elizabeth River behind the downtown festival marketplace, police spokesman Larry Hill said.

The man later was identified as Calvin White, of the 300 block of Nicholson St. Hill said the body of White, 47, may have been in the water two to three days.

The lunch-hour discovery jolted some onlookers and nearby workers.

``It was horrible,'' said Kelly Smith, marketing director for the American Rover tall ship, which had just returned from a harbor tour with a group of preschool children.

The body was taken to the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death, Hill said.

About 1:41 p.m., police were called to Harrison's Fishing Pier in the 400 block of W. Ocean View Ave. after a body was spotted in the water.

Charles Woodard, manager at the pier, said he was helping customers behind the counter at the bait shack when someone ran in to call police.

``When he ran inside, it just flashed into me the body must have come up,'' said Woodard, recalling an April 17 report that a man fell off the pier.

The body was floating face-down in about 10 feet of water, Woodard said.

Only a few people were at the pier when the body was found, Woodard said. But the commotion quickly drew a crowd of about 30.

The tide pulled the body about 900 yards away from the shore before police and fire personnel arrived, Woodard said.

Police did not release the name of the victim.

Woodard said the body was discovered about five feet from where a man, 33, fell last week.

The body was taken to the medical examiner's office.
