Cox bills in May to contain Family Value Club mailing

Cox Communications Inc. has set up an agreement with a new company, Southshore Marketing in Norfolk, to manage the communications company's Family Value Club in Hampton Roads. The new direct marketing company signed a letter of agreement with Cox to provide membership cards for products and services to each Cox subscriber. Teagle & Little will be printing the cards, catalogs and related materials for Southshore. The offer is scheduled to arrive in the May Cox Cable billing. The Cox Family Value Club Mini catalogs will be inserted in the cable billings twice more in 1996 and four times in 1997. (Staff) Dollar Tree reports profits tripled for first quarter

Dollar Tree Stores Inc., the Norfolk-based ``all's-a-dollar'' retailer, said its profits more than tripled in the first quarter ended March 31. Friday morning, the retailer's shares touched an all-time high of 37 3/4 after the report of higher-than-expected earnings. Quarterly profits rose to $923,000 from $249,000. Sales, meantime, rose about 75 percent to $85 million in the 1996 quarter from $48.7 million in the year-earlier period. Same-store sales - revenues at stores open at least a year - rose 11.7 percent. Dollar Tree, which sells products for $1 each, has 660 stores nationwide. The State Corporation Commission has named a senior staff insurance regulator as acting commissioner of insurance while it considers a permanent replacement for Steven T. Foster. Alfred W. Gross, who now serves as deputy commissioner responsible for licensing insurers and monitoring their financial condition, will take over as acting insurance commissioner Wednesday. Gross, 49, has served as deputy commissioner since 1989. He joined the SCC's Bureau of Insurance in 1981. The Bureau of Insurance is responsible for regulating more than 1,500 insurance companies and 78,000 insurance agents. Best Products Co. Inc., the Richmond-based jewelry and home furnishings retailer, said Daniel H. Levy will replace Stewart M. Kasen as chairman and chief executive officer. Levy, 52, was vice chairman and chief operating officer of Montgomery Ward before he left in 1993. He recently has been a retail consultant for several companies, including Best, and is on the board of Dot's Apparel Co. and Chernin's Shoes. In February, Best announced that Kasen would leave as part of the company's reorganization. (Staff) by CNB
