YOUTH LEAGUE PLAYERS POSTING BIG AVERAGES

Local youth league bowling coaches should be especially proud of the achievements of their pupils this season.

Averages of the youngsters are soaring, a sign that adult leagues will be bolstered in the near future by prospects with professional potential.

A year ago, Phil Aspiras carried a 200 average in the Youth Scratch Doubles League and a 192 in the Major/Senior Trio League. Mike Krell sported a 191 average in the Major/Senior Trio. John Glasgow had a 196 in the Major Thunderbolts and 190 in the Spring Thunderbird Majors. Danny Brooke maintained a 197 in the Indian River Junior/Major/Senior. Harold Credle Jr. shot at a 193 clip in the Saturday Morning Junior/Major/Senior. Craig Ramiro averaged 192 in the Aristocrats League.

Among the girls, Kristi Richards had 184 in the IR Junior/Major/Senior. Nicole Thompson averaged 166 in the Aristocrats League. Susan Deluna had a 165 in the Lynnhaven Mixed IV and Laura Journigan carried a 161 in the Saturday Morning Junior/Major/Senior.

Most are doing even better this year. Malcolm Foust, who averaged 185 last year, recently shot a 300 game at Indian River.

Aspiras, from Chesapeake, won the 11th annual Sports Classic of the Mid-Atlantic Scratch Bowlers Association. He is averaging 214 on this tour, conducted by former youth league instructors Iva and Howard Foust.

Aspiras defeated Credle in the final. This was his third win of the year and he has been a finalist in all seven of the tournaments in which he has competed.

The State YABA Tournament will be held locally this year, providing another opportunity for the local youngsters to shine.

The area's top youth duckpin bowler, Kendra Allen, moved into adult competition this year and has high averages in both leagues in which she participates.

In the recent Youth State Duckpin Tournament, bowlers from Bowlarama and Victory Lanes swept every division and will be gunning for national crowns next month.

Bowler of the Week honors go to a hubby-wife duo, John and Teatta Confalone.
