MARGARET T. SMITH

Margaret T. Smith, 83, of the 800 block of Dorset Ave., died May 4, 1996, in Maryview Hospital.

She was retired and was a native of Tillery, N.C. Mrs. Smith was the widow of Walter A. Smith Sr. She was a member of Third Baptist Church where she served as deaconess, church training teacher, was a member of Tulie Peet Bible Class, Loyal Workers Club, Cheerful Givers Club, and assisted with the feeding of the hungry. She was also a member of the Deacon and Deaconess Association, Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star of Virginia (Prince Hall Affiliation), Grand Courts of Calathe, and A.B. Mason Missionary (NU)2.

She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Smith of Portsmouth; three sons, Walter A. Smith Jr. and Robert C. Smith, both of Portsmouth, and Edward G. Smith of Aberdeen, Md.; a sister, Susie Alston of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; two adopted granddaughters; 12 great-grandchildren; four daughters-in-law, Audrey Smith and Alice Smith, both of Portsmouth, Belva Smith of Norfolk, Alexis Smith of Aberdeen; a sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law; an uncle; nieces; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a son, William A. Smith.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming in Third Baptist Church. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends at the residence, 801 Dorset Ave. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
