PLANTING GUIDES ACCOMPANY PICTURES OF HISTORIC GARDENS

LOCAL BOY MAKES good in the garden world'' would be a fitting tribute to Kent Brinkley for the success of the book he co-authored with Gordon Chappel about gardens in Colonial Williamsburg.

Born in Norfolk, Brinkley graduated from Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach in 1970 and then attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C. He later attended Old Dominion University.

He currently is a landscape architect and garden historian for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, which he joined in 1985.

He and co-worker Chappell wrote ``The Gardens of Colonial Williamsburg,'' which features 20 of the historic area's gardens. Photos and planting guides accompany each one, from the formal beauty of the Governor's Palace Garden to the informal charm of the Shields Tavern kitchen garden.

Chappell has been director of landscape and facilities at the colonial capital since 1983. A graduate of the University of Georgia and a registered Landscape Architect, he manages landscape and floral services for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. He is chairman of the annual Garden Symposium, which is the longest running educational seminar in the colonial capital.

The authors present histories of each site, focusing on the gardeners who originally planted them and the archaeological research that guided their re-creation. Stunning photography and detailed plans accompany the text in a way that shows how 20th-century gardeners can transplant 18th-century practices into their own backyards.

``The Gardens of Colonial Williamsburg,'' which was released in late 1995, is already in its second printing and is selling well nationally and internationally.

It is available at Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center bookstore and other retail outlets for $29.95. It can be ordered by sending a check for $35.95, plus sales tax, to Dept. 023, Box 3532, Williamsburg, Va. 23187-3532. To order with a charge card, call (800) 446-9240. by CNB
