EUGENE E. MIHALYKA

Dr. Eugene E. Mihalyka, 78, died in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on May 24, 1996.

Dr. Mihalyka was the son of the late Daniel Alexander and Elizabeth Rose K. Mihalyka of New Brunswick, N.J. He graduated from John Hopkins University, the Medical College of Virginia and Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. As a fellow of the American College of Otorhimolaryngology, he practiced surgery in Cleveland, Ohio, until retiring to make his home at ``Cherry-Core'' near Cheriton in Northampton County, Va.

Dr. Mihalyka was proud of his membership in Kappa Sigma Fraternity and of achieving the rank of eagle scout and life membership in the Boy Scouts of America.

He served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, retiring as a major. He was active in the Christian Business Mens' Association. A devoted Episcopalian, he attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Cape Charles, Va.

Dr. Mihalyka was deeply involved in Masonic work. He was a member and past master of Capeville Masonic Lodge (NU)107 AF & AM, a member of the Royal Arch Chapter (NU)12, and of the Chesapeake Commandry (NU)28. He was grand physician of the Grand Commandry of Virginia. As a member of the Portsmouth Scottish Rite, he held the rank of knight commander, court of honor. He was past president and secretary-treasurer of the E.S. Scottish Rite Association. He was a member of Khedive Shrine Temple and Commonwealth York Rite College.

Dr. Mihalyka is survived by his wife, Jean Merritt Mihalyka; a son, George Kristofer Mihalyka; and his wife, Joytt; and by a grandson, Kristofer George Mihalyka, all of Vicksburg, Miss.; a daughter, Jane Gibson and granddaughter, Charlotte M. Gibson of Chesapeake.

A memorial service will be conducted by Father Peter Jacobsen at 10:30 a.m. Monday May 27, 1996, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Cape Charles. Memorials may be made to the Eastern Shore Room of the Public Library in Accomac, Va. 23301. Arrangements will be by the Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home of Cape Charles.
