LEROY JONES

LeRoy Jones, 72, of the 6500 block of Ferry Point Road, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 25, 1996. He died in Portsmouth.

Mr. Jones was a native of Lasker, N.C., but resided in Norfolk and Suffolk most of his life. He was the son of the late James H. Jones and Pearl Jones Williams. A veteran of World War II, he served his country for five years in the U.S. Army 29th Division Signal Corps. He served in England, Germany, Belgium, Holland and in the Battle of Normandy in France. After the war, he was employed in the Seafood Industry with the Ballard Fish and Oyster Co. as plant superintendent and with Fass Brothers Seafood and Hampton Roads Seafood as a wholesale seafood salesman. He retired from Hampton Roads Seafood in 1993.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Doris Lerelene Sexton Jones; a daughter, Kathy Lynne Meadows and her husband Jimmy of Suffolk; a son, Rev. James L. Jones and his wife Jeanette of Ringgold, Ga.; two brothers, Floyd W. Jones and his wife Evelyn of Natural Bridge, Va.; Clyde R. Jones and his wife Anne of Chesapeake; two stepbrothers, Ray Williams and his wife, Margaret, of Norfolk and Wilton Williams; four grandsons, Bryan Meadows, Jordon, Jared, and Jamison Jones; two granddaughters, Melanie Meadows and Janssen Jones; sister-in-law, Barbara Haywood of Windsor, Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Danny and Shelby Christmas of Chesapeake; William and Joan Rapier of Suffolk; and a host of great-nieces, nephews, other caring and loving relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be conducted at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, on Tuesday, May 28, at 11 a.m. The Rev. James L. Jones and the Rev. Timothy Piland will officiate. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and at other times at 6520 Ferry Point Road, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund of Nansemond River Baptist Church, Suffolk.
