JOHN B. MEREDITH

John Berkley ``Jack'' Meredith, 71, of 600 Gloucester Road, died Sunday, May 26, 1996, at the University of Virginia hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Isabelle Lewellyn Meredith; a son and daughter-in-law and two granddaughters, John Berkley Jr. and Betty Baylor Meredith, and Erin and Kelly of Virginia Beach; two stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Terry D. Sumey of Lynchburg and Randy Lewellyn and Teri Ritchie Sumey of Weyers Cave; three brothers, Hal J. Meredith Jr. of Front Royal, Gen. W. Thomas Meredith of Smith Mountain Lake and Edward Andy Meredith of Elon College, N.C.; and a sister, Jeanne Meredith Busse of Charlottesville. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Robin S. Sumey; and a brother, Clayton T. ``Amos'' Meredith.

Mr. Meredith was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Leesburg, Va., the son of the late Hal James and Kathryn Thurman Meredith. He attended Elon College and was a graduate of James Madison University. He served two and a half years in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. Mr. Meredith owned Quality Improvements Inc. and Meredith Rent-A-Space. He had taught in the public schools of Virginia for 15 years. He was active in many civic and professional organizations. Mr. Meredith was a past deacon of Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, a past president of the Waynesboro Exchange Club, a founding member of the Stuarts Draft Business Association, a charter member and three-term president and first Life Member of the Augusta Home Builders Association, whose annual motivational award bears his name. He was one of the first in Virginia to receive the CGR (Certified Graduate Remodeler) designation. He held every major office in the Home Builders Association of Virginia, and was State President in 1988. He had served on the council of the National Home Builders Association.

The funeral will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church by Dr. Fred A. Holbrook with Steve Frazier assisting with the interment, which follows in the church cemetery. Those desiring to make memorial contributions may consider the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad, Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, or the charity of their choice.
