HUNDLEY, TRUCKERS RULE ALL-PORTSMOUTH TEAM

FOR THE SECOND YEAR in a row, Churchland's Stacey Hundley has been selected as the outstanding softball player in Portsmouth high schools.

Hundley, a junior, is one of six Truckers named on the 1996 All-Portsmouth team.

The squad was picked by Currents with nominations from city coaches.

The 12-player first team also has five players from Wilson and one from Alliance Christian.

Hundley, a shortstop, batted .408 and scored 24 runs as a leadoff hitter. She stole 29 bases and had an on-base percentage of .581. An exceptional fielder with a strong arm, she made only eight errors all year for a .936 fielding average.

A year ago Hundley played third base and hit .415.

This is her third straight year on the all-city team.

The other Truckers on the first unit are catcher Blanca Vazquez, pitcher Michelle Pearson, outfielders Norma Johnson and Ashley Miller and utility Melissa Betts.

The Wilson players are first baseman Erica Davis, second baseman Shawndall ``Dee Dee'' Fox, third baseman Nikki Goral, outfielder Paula Miller and pitcher Amanda Adams.

The Alliance representative is Amanda Renfrow.

The team has one senior, six juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen.

A righthander, Pearson compiled a 14-7 record. She hurled four shutouts and seven one-hitters. She had a 1.54 earned run average and struck out 86 batters, believed to be a school record.

Wilson pitcher Amanda Adams is a holdover on the first team. She registered six victories for the Presidents, striking out 66 batters in 90 innings.

Vazquez, elevated from last year's second team, batted .400 and paced the Truckers in runs batted in with 28. Only six runners stole bases on her and she threw out 21.

Davis, who hit .300, also moved up from the 1995 second unit.

Fox batted .500 for the Presidents and had a .625 slugging average. The sophomore was chosen on the all-city first team for the second consecutive season. She struck out only twice all year.

Third baseman Goral led Wilson in hitting with a .588 average. She sported a .647 slugging average.

Ashley Miller, the only senior on Churchland's team, batted .333. She did not commit any errors after she was moved to the outfield from third base early in the season. She also is an all-city first-team holdover.

Johnson, who played rightfield and served as the Truckers' designated hitter, batted .350. She won Churchland's most improved player award.

Paula Miller of Wilson batted .370. She advanced from last year's second all-city team.

Utility player Betts, one of two freshmen on the squad, topped Churchland in batting with a .452 average. She led the Truckers in doubles, triples and home runs.

Designated hitter Renfrow, the other frosh, actually was a catcher but hit on the Alliance team, which went 14-5.

The second team is dominated by the private schools with Alliance and Portsmouth Christian placing seven. Norcom had three and Wilson had two. MEMO: The All-Southeastern District softball team will be announced in
