ALL-CHESAPEAKE TEAM HEADED BY WILDCATS' CUDDYER

Great Bridge junior Mike Cuddyer was the top vote-getter on the 1996 All-City baseball squad and earned Chesapeake Player of the Year honors, as selected by Southeastern District coaches and The Virginian-Pilot.

Cuddyer, a shortstop and pitcher, led the Wildcats with a .541 batting average and drove in 50 runs. His league-high 13 home runs and 50 RBIs are believed to be district records and came in 64 at-bats.

Here's a look at the first-team picks:

Pitchers: Great Bridge junior John Curtice, Indian River senior Keith Reynolds and Greenbrier Christian senior Nick James earned honors. Curtice compiled a 7-1 record with one save while fanning 88 batters in 48 innings. He walked only 15 and gave up 26 hits with a 1.02 ERA. Reynolds, who posted a league-low 0.59 ERA, was 8-0 with two saves. Reynolds struck out 87 and allowed 22 hits in 47 1/3 innings. James, a southpaw who earned a scholarship to James Madison, was 8-1 with a 0.40 ERA.

Catcher: Senior Skip Harrison of Indian River had 30 hits, drove in 21 runs and a .469 batting average.

Infielders: Cuddyer, along with Mark Caudell, an Oscar Smith senior, Greenbrier Christian second baseman Ross Robertson and Great Bridge sophomore Brian Anderson were named to the first team. Caudell batted .389 with 21 hits and 22 RBIs. Robertson led the Gators with a .421 average and had only one fielding error. Anderson, a third baseman, drove in 17 runs and notched a .393 average.

Outfielders: Reynolds, the team's only other double selection, Deep Creek's Wes Barnett and Great Bridge junior Bradford Tibbs were selected in the outfield. Barnett batted .354 with seven RBIs. Tibbs, who drove in 11 runs, hit .442.

Utility: Deep Creek sophomore Kevin Chambly had 22 hits for a .407 average with 17 RBIs.
