MARINERS OVERPOWER WILMINGTON

The Hampton Roads Mariners hammered Wilmington 7-0 in an exhibition game Saturday night.

A crowd of 1,038 turned out at First Colonial to watch the Mariners tally their highest total this season. Hampton Roads dominated the game but was slow to get the scoring going. Once the offense ignited, the Hammerheads were unable to stem the flow.

Jesse Marsch and Stilian Shishkov netted two goals each and Scott Lawler, Paul Cann and Byron Mitchell added scoring strikes. Wilmington pitted first Taylor Borada, then Ashley Goode against the attack, but both were overpowered by the Mariners 29 shots. Wilmington had nine shots on goal.

Marsch sparked the attack with the Mariners' lone first-half goal.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Cann dribbled to the keepers' box, then powered a shot as he was tackled by Goode. The ball bounced behind the downed pair and slipped into the open net.

At 28:30, Marsch faked off the goalie and flipped the ball into the open net. He substituted out for Ryan Leib. Almost immediately, Leib broke away and shot down the left. Goode came out to challenge. Leib chipped the pass to Shishkov who took the uncontested scoring shot.

Wilmington trailed 4-0 when a red card ejection was issued with 10 minutes remaining.

``I think it's the old story,'' Hampton Roads coach Shawn McDonald said. ``They did something stupid, got a guy thrown out and then kind of fell to pieces. We've seen other teams do it this year, but just haven't opened it up. It was good to get some goals.''

Shishkov, who has seen limited playing time in recent games, cracked two goals with two assists in his 26 minutes of play. For his second goal, he danced past a defender, then went one-on-one with Goode. He bypassed Goode, then slammed a shot through the three defenders protecting the goal-line.

``Sometimes I like to do that,'' Shishkov said of his second goal. ``I took my chance and I got lucky. I'm pretty excited.''

He followed his goal with a searing pass to Lawler who nailed the upper left corner for a 6-0 margin. With less than three minutes remaining, Shishkov was challenging again when he was tackled in the box. Mitchell scored on the ensuing penalty kick. by CNB
