WELTON C. GAINES

Welton C. Gaines, 74, of the 4800 block of Town Point Road, died June 14, 1996, in his home.

Mr. Gaines was born in Norfolk County and was the founder, owner and operator of Gaines Bus Service. He had retired as a rigger from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 30 years. He was a member and deacon of New Hope Baptist Church, Suffolk, and a member of the Senior Choir and Missionary Choir. He was a former member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Portsmouth. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army; member of Pughsville Civic League; and was recognized for his contributions to building homes in the community. He was the founder of the Pughsville Chapter of the NAACP and a member of the Pughsville Chorus. He was the inventor of a patented knot for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Mr. Gaines was known for his creativity, for residential and commercial construction, and renovation along the East Coast of the United States.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian R. Gaines; two daughters, Toni Green of Norfolk and Leona Thomas of Portsmouth; two sons, Charles H. Gaines of Durham, N.C., and Dominique Gaines of Hagerstown, Md.; four sisters, Viola Cobb, Mary Anderson and Laura Jordan, all of Chesapeake, and Maggie Pritchett of Hartford, Conn.; three brothers, William Gaines and James Gaines, both of Chesapeake, and Robert Gains of Fayetteville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in New Hope Baptist Church, Suffolk, by Dr. William E. Russell. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens with military honors. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
