SCHOOL BULLETIN BOARD

New principals assigned

Three new principals will take the helm of elementary schools this fall as the result of retirements.

So far, the School Board has named replacements at two schools. Those principals are:

Shirley B. Pegram, principal of Lindenwood. Pegram previously was assistant principal of Granby Elementary. She takes over from retiring Lindenwood principal Mamie L. Ratliff.

Sylvia E. Spratley, principal of Tidewater Park. Spratley was formerly assistant principal of Coleman Place Elementary. She takes over from retiring principal Jean Alexander. Alexander, a 35-year veteran of the school system, came under fire during the past school year from officers of the Education Association of Norfolk. The EAN had demanded that the superintendent remove Alexander following a dispute involving Alexander and a second-grade teacher who was dismissed for insubordination.

The School Board has not named a replacement for the third retiring principal, Bernard Chapel of Sewells Point Elementary. Chapel has been appointed as a special assistant in the administration's Division of School Governance until his retirement becomes effective later in the year.

In addition, Stuart Gifted Center principal Deborah A. Holland has been named to a new position: senior coordinator of gifted education services. High SAT scores

City school officials recently recognized 11 middle school students who scored 500 or above on the math or verbal portion of the Scholastic Assessment Test, a college entrance exam typically taken by high school juniors and seniors.

``They scored at the same level of college-bound high school students,'' said Pamela C. Kloeppel, coordinator of guidance for Norfolk schools. ``These are smart kids.''

The 11 students are: Vincent Bousquet, Matthew Degree, Jamie Haven, Candice Evans, Emily Webster, Lauren Anderson, Brian Kirby, Mike Piper, Jennifer Sutton, William Jennette and Yin Wu. Language academy

Five Norfolk students have been named to attend the prestigious Governor's Foreign Language Academy.

They are: Ryan Cooper of Booker T. Washington High; Sarah Farrar and Rachel Swanson of Maury High; Anna Studer of Granby High; and Jane Cabales of Lake Taylor High.

Cooper and Farrar will study French, while the other three will study German.
