PREPARE FOR THE ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES

WE'RE SEEING RED in Hampton Roads. The smooth, bright, juicy, fleshy red of summer tomatoes.

As far as I'm concerned, there's not much better than a sliced tomato, slathered with mayonnaise and sprinkled with salt and pepper, between two pieces of soft white bread. But I could be convinced otherwise.

If you send in one of the 10 best tomato recipes, you'll be a winner in the Killer Tomato Recipe Contest.

WHRO-TV 15 and The Virginian-Pilot are co-sponsoring the contest, which runs through Aug. 10. Winners will receive prizes from Bouillabaisse in Norfolk and an appearance on WHRO. In addition, their recipes will be published in Flavor on Sept. 1.

Gardening columnist Robert Stiffler, Denise Strickland, co-owner of Boullabaisse, and I will judge the entries based on originality, taste and ease of preparation.

Send your best tomato recipe to: Killer Tomato, WHRO, 5200 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, 23508-1598. Recipes must be legible and include contestant's name, address and daytime phone number. Entries must be received by Aug. 10.

Superlative sauce

Congratulations are in order for Peter's Beach Barbeque.

The Virginia Beach company's Beach Barbeque Sauce and Mari

nade was named one of the top five sauces in the country in the July issue of Bon Appetit.

``It was quite a surprise,'' said Peter Holland, owner of Peter's Beach Sauce.

Editors of the national food magazine tasted more than two dozen sauces and placed Peter's at the top of the list, saying, ``this sauce . . . is for lovers of tangy, vinegar-based recipes. It would make a zesty complement to any barbecued ribs.''

Peter's is available locally at Cuisine and Co., Three Gulls, Ragged Robin, Virginia Sampler, East of Napa and Cork & Cheddar in Virginia Beach; West Side Wine Shop and the Virginia Shop in Norfolk; Pfeiffer's Books & Fine Wine in Portsmouth; Tommy's Market and The Cotton Gin on the Outer Banks; Casey's and the Cheese Shop, Williamsburg; and Taste Unlimited in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.

The other four sauces listed by Bon Appetit are: Willingham's Original Mild Sauce, Memphis; Sonny Bryan's Barbecue Sauce, Dallas; Johnny Harris Delicious Famous Bar-B-Cue Sauce, Savannah; and Boardroom's Bar-B-Q Sauce Original, Kansas. ILLUSTRATION: Color file photo
