AUCTION WILL HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR MARITIME FOREST

The Nature Conservancy's sixth annual Benefit Auction for Nags Head Woods will be held Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Sanderling Inn in Duck.

The auction provides an opportunity to acquire high-quality work by some of the Outer Banks' most talented artists and to win weekend vacation packages to some of America's most popular islands.

Proceeds go to the Nags Head Woods Preserve. This 1,400-acre maritime forest has long been recognized as one of North Carolina's most important natural areas. Owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, an international conservation organization, the preserve is one of the most biologically diverse maritime forests on the Atlantic Coast.

This year's contributing artists include Rick Tupper, Carol Trotman, John Silver, Ellie Grumiaux, John de la Vega, Gail Kowalski, Mike Halminski, Ray Matthews, Larry Bray, Vic and Ellen Bert, Russell Yerkes and Ken Kelly - along with many others. Some of these artists are widely known and widely awarded for their work.

Other items include:

A Madcap Manhattan Weekend, including tickets to leading Broadway productions and accommodations in one of New York's leading hotels.

Dinner for eight in the home of Betty and Doug Brindley. This meal is prepared by Sam McGann of The Blue Point Grill in Duck.

Romantic weekend getaways at Manteo's White Doe Bed and Breakfast, with dinner on the Manteo waterfront at Clara's and 1587 Restaurant, and on Ocracoke Island, with a private boat trip to Portsmouth Island.

Golf packages at Nags Head Golf Links and The Currituck Club.

The auction includes a live auction and a silent auction and will feature a total of more than 100 items. There will be a buffet meal served on the Sanderling Inn's deck and entertainment by jazz singer Laura Martier and her band.

The event begins at 5 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person or $100 for sponsor tickets. Sponsors' names will be listed in the auction program.
