JOHN J. WHALEN JR.

John Joseph Whalen Jr., formerly of the 100 block of Beverly Ave., Norfolk, and for the past 1 1/2 years a resident of the Oakwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Virginia Beach, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 1996, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mr. Whalen was the widower of Muriel Tayloe Whalen. He was born in Lynn, Mass., and had resided in Norfolk since early childhood. He retired from the Norfolk Fire Department in 1970 after 28 years of service. Prior to this, he was the baker at old St. Vincent DePaul Hospital in Norfolk. Mr. Whalen was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Norfolk.

Survivors include two sons, John Joseph ``Joe'' Whalen III and his wife, Marlyn, of Chesapeake, and Michael Tayloe Whalen of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by four grandchildren, J.J. Whalen IV, Kim W. Stevenson, both of Chesapeake, Michael Dean Whalen, Barbara W. Mostoller, both of Virginia Beach; as well as four great-grandchildren, Bryan L. Donison, Wesley John Whalen of Virginia Beach, Kelli and Megan Stevenson of Chesapeake. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John J. Whalen Sr. and Mary Ann Whalen; two brothers, James M. and Edmund F. Whalen, two sisters, Rita W. Seiberlick and Florence E. Whalen.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Julian Goodman. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. As a result of his wife's illness prior to her death, Mr. Whalen requested that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 20 Koger Executive Center, Norfolk, Va. 23502.
