FLETCHER B. CRICHTON

Fletcher B. Crichton, 95, of Main St., died Oct. 17, 1996, in his home

Mr. Crichton was a lifelong resident of Southampton County. He was the widower of Forrest Williams Crichton, to whom he was married for 67 years. He was the oldest son of eight children of the late Edward Winfield and Rena Joyner Crichton.

Mr. Crichton was retired from Whitehurst Paving Company of Richmond and also a retired farmer. He was the only surviving member of the 1921 Courtland High School football team, which beat Thomas Jefferson High for the Virginia State Championship. After his retirement, he cooked many meals for his fellow members of the Indiantown Hunt Club, and he enjoyed many hours of fishing on the Nottoway River. He was a member of Capron United Methodist Church and the Capron Ruritan Club.

He is survived by two daughters, Winifred C. Fanshaw and her husband, Kenneth of Norfolk, Clyde C. Pulley and her husband C. Graham of Courtland; a son, James Bentley Crichton and his wife, Marjorie of Waverly; a sister, Florence C. Cliatt of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. He was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters, James Winfield Crichton, Leroy Joseph ``Dick'' Crichton, Edward Winfield ``Pretty'' Crichton, Elsie C. Hawks, Sallie C. Holmes Hatton and Margaret C. Powers.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Capron Cemetery by the Rev. Lowell Stovall. The family will receive friends at the home of Clyde and Graham Pulley, 28521 Pulley Drive in Courtland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Capron Rescue Squad. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
