LEAGUE OFFERS WORKSHOPS TO EDUCATE VOTERS ON AMENDMENTS

The League of Women Voters of South Hampton Roads is launching a series of public workshops on the five proposed amendments to the Virginia Constitution coming up in the Nov. 5 elections.

``This is part of our `Get Out the Vote' campaign because we believe citizens who know what to expect on the ballot are more likely to vote,'' said Barbara Ballard, chapter president.

The five Virginia amendments concern: the public employees' retirement system, rights of crime victims, the commonwealth's right of appeal on court cases, voting and voter registration, and incorporation of churches and religious denominations.

The workshops are free, although those who attend can buy breakfast or lunch separately at some sessions.

The schedule:

Saturday, 10 a.m., London House, 516 London Blvd., Portsmouth.

Oct. 24, noon, Harbor Club, Norfolk. Lunch is separate. Discussion is free, but this is the only workshop for which reservations must be made. Call 627-3396.

Oct. 25, 7 a.m., Shoney's restaurant, 21st and Granby streets, Norfolk. Breakfast is separate.

Oct. 26, 10 a.m., Eastern Shore Chapel, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. Discussion will include the proposed activation of a redevelopment and housing authority in Virginia Beach.

At each workshop, the league also will distribute nonpartisan election-issue materials for the presidential campaign, Ballard said.

Also, there will be information on how to cast absentee ballots and the telephone numbers of voter registrars in each South Hampton Roads city.

The league also will have material in all libraries in local cities, Ballard said.

For more information, call the league at 627-3396.
