C. WYATT BAUM SR.

C. Wyatt Baum Sr., 82, died Oct. 29, 1996, at a Nags Head nursing facility.

Mr. Baum was a native of Kitty Hawk and was a retired chief warrant officer, W4, for the U.S. Coast Guard for 30 years. He was the chief carpenter during his latter years in the Coast Guard prior to being a part of the Merchant Marine Inspection for the Coast Guard. He was a member of the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and the Manteo Masonic Lodge (NU)521. He was the keel inspector on the first nuclear ship, the N.S. Savannah.

As a teen-ager, he built some homes on the beach with supplies that were delivered on a horse-drawn cart. He was the advisor for the building of the altar that is currently being used in the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. Mr. Baum will be remembered by many for his hobby and ability for clock-making and watch repairs. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Baum and Mamie Perry Baum; two sisters, Ruby Young and Katherine Walston.

Mr. Baum is survived by his wife, Buena Hines Baum, presently residing at Britthaven of the Outer Banks; one son, Clavis Wyatt Baum Jr. of Southern Shores, N.C.; one aunt, Otilla Berry of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren, Clavis Wyatt III of Tucson, Ariz., William Michael of Kitty Hawk, Thomas Matthew and his wife Belinda of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Donna B. Perry of Kitty Hawk; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brad Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow in the Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk, with military rites. A visitation is scheduled for today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, with the participation of Masonic rites.
