SERIES: DECISION '96
As Virginians look forward to Tuesday's election, they are thinking a
lot about the qualities they want in their leaders. Virginians attach
roughly equal importance to the candidates' stands on the issues and
the candidates' leadership qualities. We posed questions about
leadership to the candidates for Congress. We'll run one a day up to
        Election Day.<

THE CANDIDATES ON COMPROMISE

``On what things are your not willing to compromise?

SENATE

John W. Warner (R)

I will not compromise on matters involving constitutional rights, states' rights, personal freedom and national security.

Mark R. Warner (D)

Obviously, I am not willing to compromise on basic principles like honesty and fairness. While I am willing to have an open discussion on any issue with any voter, I will not compromise on my support for public education and a woman's right to choose.

2ND DISTRICT

Owen B. Pickett (D)

Fundamental issues of honesty, integrity, constitutional principles, rule of law and that fact that we are a nation of laws and not men.

John F. Tate (R)

I am committed to a strong defense, smaller government, lower taxes and traditional values. Those are the issues that are important to me.

3RD DISTRICT

Elsie Goodwyn Holland (R)

You can't compromise your integrity. I wouldn't. I would always be truthful.

Robert C. ``Bobby'' Scott (D)

I strongly support public education. I oppose the death penalty and support the Constitution of the United States. And I believe the Constitution shouldn't be tinkered with for political gain, and I say that in the context of Bob Dole in his closing remarks in the last debate mentioned at least four constitutional amendments he supported. He made it seem like the Constitution was the problem.

4TH DISTRICT

Norman Sisisky (D)

I won't compromise my faith, my family or my love for this country.

Anthony Zevgolis (R)

I'm certainly not willing to compromise character and integrity and honesty, and the security of the country or the laws of the country that I'm sworn to uphold.
