TODAY'S EARLY BIRDS GET THE WARMTH BEFORE IT FLIES

Nature is a confused ol' gal, or so it seems in Hampton Roads this week.

Just look at Thursday's low temperature - 53 - which was 6 degrees higher than the normal high for this time of year. And Friday's high of 56 was 9 degrees above normal as well.

But that's nothing. Just watch today, when the mercury is expected to climb into the mid-60s - just in time to take a sharp plunge back to freezing by Sunday.

If you want to enjoy the warm weather, do it in the morning; temperatures will be falling by this afternoon. You may even hear a few claps of thunder to usher in the leap back to winter as the cold air sweeps in, the National Weather Service said Friday.

After the cold front moves through, pushing showers and isolated thunderstorms out to sea, skies will clear. But there will be gusty northwesterly winds.

Along the coast, gale warnings were in effect overnight. The forecast called for southerly winds near 35 to 40 mph and gusty, shifting to northwest by tonight and gradually subsiding. Small craft advisories are up for the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds.

Everything settles down by Sunday, with partly cloudy skies and a high only in the lower 40s.
