MILLARD P. STRICKLER

Millard Pilson Strickler, 92, of Lexington, Va., formerly of Virginia Beach, died Jan. 23, 1997, at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Shaner Strickler.

A life-long educator in Virginia, he served as principal of four schools in Rockbridge Country and southwest Virginia before becoming principal of Oceana High School in Princess Anne County in 1950.

In 1954, he was promoted to assistant superintendent of the county, later Virginia Beach City, public schools, the position from which he retired in 1969. Two years later he became assistant headmaster of the upper school at Huguenot Academy in Powhatan, Va., remaining in that post for five years. In 1982, he mover to Lexington and then to Sunnyside in 1991. He was a 1927 graduate of Hampden Sydney College and earned his masters in education from the University of Virginia. In Virginia Beach, he help organize the Virginia Beach Kiwanis Club and served as its president in 1958. He was both a deacon and elder in First Presbyterian Church, where he was superintendent of the Sunday School and president of the Men's Bible Class. He was also chairman of the board of directors of the Atlantic Mental Hygiene Center for two years and served on the board of directors of the Crippled Children's Society. He was a member of the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club. In Lexington, he was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church and the Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include his three sons, Edmund of Livington, Texas, Stephen of Virginia Beach and Michael of Lexington, Va.; one grandson and five granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

A church service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1997, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel of Virginia Beach by Dr. J. Scottie Griffin. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 36th and Pacific Ave., Virginia Beach, Va. 23451, or Sunnyside Retirement Community, 100 Sunnyside Drive, Suite A, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
