GEORGE J. HABIT SR.

George Joseph Habit Sr., 67, of the 4500 block of High St. West, died Jan. 26, 1997, in Maryview Medical Center.

Mr. Habit was the son of the late Edward Habit and Mrs. Najla Alice Habit. Over the past 45 years he had worked in Portsmouth as manager of Robert Hall Village, Fine's Men Shop and most recently as a furniture consultant with M.M. Crockin Furniture Co. He was a member of the Church of the Resurrection and was currently serving on the Committee of Rehabilitative Services Incentive Fund for the city of Portsmouth.

A native of Edenton, N.C., he was a former outstanding high school athlete in four sports. He was a former member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Edenton, and the Edenton Jaycees. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Boswell Habit; three children, Mary Ruth Habit of Charlottesville, Va., Georgia H. Reid and husband John of Cumming, Ga., George J. Habit Jr. and wife Nacy of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Brandon H. Koch, Bryanna Habit, Isabella Habit; four sisters, Freda H. White, Lena Griffin, Mary Maroon, all of Edenton, Julia Pietrolongo of Port Richey, Fla.; and a brother, Al Habit Sr. of Virginia Beach.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Church of the Resurrection by the Rev. James Carr. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
