Nicholas Dexter Newbern, 55, of Highway 158, died at his residence Jan. 26, 1997.
A native of Jarvisburg, he was a farmer and a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church. He was the husband of Vickie Diane Goodman Newbern of the home and the son of Murden Snow Newbern of Jarvisburg and the late Nicholas C. Newbern.
Besides his mother and wife, survivors include three sons, Dennis Lee Newbern and Danny Ray Newbern, both of Powells Point, Nicholas Andrew Newbern of Jarvisburg; two stepdaughters, Sherrie Upchurch of Virginia Beach and Denise Costell of Greenville; two stepsons, Joseph Costell of Suffolk and James Costell of Grandy; five grandchildren; and eight stepgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Poplar Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Herbert Hemingway officiating, assisted by the Rev. Michael Jordan. Burial will follow in the Newbern Family Cemetery in Jarvisburg. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge of arrangements.
