JOHN H. BEST

John Henry Best, 77, of the 500 block of Mount Pleasant Road, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997, in a Chesapeake hospital.

Mr. Best was born in Bowling Green, Ky., and was the son of the late Charlie B. and Sarah Mayes Best. He was also predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Mable P. Best.

Mr. Best was a retired warrant officer (WO1) in the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. He was the owner of Best Bike Shop in Norfolk for 10 years. He later became a computer operator for the Hampton Roads Tunnel Commission for 10 years. He was a member of Fleet Reserve Association.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Best; one daughter, Patricia Ann Ward of Virginia Beach; four sons, John Henry Best Jr. of Virginia Beach, James L. Best of San Diego, Calif., Richard D. Best of Chesapeake and Michael A. Best of Virginia Beach; a sister, Ivy Ausbrooks of Bowling Green; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. Burial will follow with military honors at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin on Tuesday with the family receiving friends at the funeral home the same evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Following the service on Wednesday, the family will be at 2712 Halsey St., Chesapeake.
