GEORGE E. PARRISH

George Edward Parrish, born Sept. 2, 1932, left this world to join his Lord at 12:30 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997 in Riverside Hospital.

Born in Edenton, N.C., he moved his family to Newport News in 1958. He worked for C & O Railroad for 17 years as a pier operator, intermitted for A & P as produce manager, and for his father, Parrish's Truck Farm, delivering produce to North Carolina and Virginia. In 1967, along with his wife and children, he established Dean & Don's Farm Market.

He was a disciplined man of principles, follower of our Lord, Jesus Christ, devoted husband and father. He will be remembered for his quiet joy of life, church leadership, love of achievement, dedication to his community and for the guidance he willingly provided to the newly ``self employed.''

He was preceded in death by his father, John E. Parrish of Edenton and his sister, Shirley Vochatzer of Kansas City, Mo.

He will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Mary Esther Saunders Parrish; a daughter, Wanda Elaine Parrish; son, Dean Parrish and his wife Connie M., all of Newport News; and a son, Don Parrish and his wife Aline B. of Punta Gorda, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Stacy Lee Harrell, Stephanie Lynn Hobbs and her husband David W., Ryan Dean Parrish and Joshua Edward Parrish, all of Newport News and by Christina Marie, John W. and Christopher M. Parrish, all of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and one great-grandchild, Tristan David Hobbs of Newport News; his mother, Beulah N. Parrish; two brothers, John D. Parrish and wife Lois and Russell Wayne Parrish; and a sister, Marjorie P. Carver and her husband James A. of Edenton; and many friends.

Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in First Freewill Baptist Church, Brooke Street, Newport News, with special friend and minister, Tag Kilgore officiating. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorials may be sent to the First Freewill Baptist Church Missions or to the Peninsula Cancer Society.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold. Proverbs 22:1.
