DRY CLEAN ONLY MEANS DRY CLEAN ONLY

Your Jan. 26 Sunday Business article, ``Dry clean only?'' requires an answer in the interest of the consumer who might consider the source, Consumer Reports, as gospel on any subject. It is the most misleading information on clothing care that I have seen in my 61 years of experience in dry cleaning.

A label stating ``Dry Clean Only'' is put on the garment by the manufacturer according to law - the Federal Trade Commission - for the specific purpose of protecting the consumer and indicates that it cannot be washed safely at home or elsewhere. And to recommend that a cashmere sweater, usually priced at $150 to $275, be placed in a washing machine is indeed the epitome of misinformation.
