CLINTON D. CUTHRIELL

Clinton Dunford Cuthriell, of the 200 block of Tanbridge Road, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Portsmouth on Aug. 14, 1926, and raised in Norfolk. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman F. and Agnes C. Cuthriell and two brothers, Norman F. Cuthriell Jr. and Alonza C. Cuthriell.

Mr. Cuthriell served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then joined the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring as a chief petty officer in 1966 with more than 22 years total military service. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, he worked as a civilian for the U.S. Army Transportation Center, Marine Division, at Fort Eustis, Va., as an instructor and Army Ship Surveyor. He retired in 1985. He was a member of College Acres Baptist Church and a member of Wilmington Masonic Lodge (NU)319, the Scottish Rite in Norfolk, and Oman Shrine Temple, Charleston, S.C.

Surviving are his wife, Anne Nifong Cuthriell of the home; a son, Clinton D. Cuthriell Jr. and wife, Joy, of Wilmington, N.C.; two stepchildren, Ronald W. Vogler Jr. of Wilmington, Sharon V. Galloway of Asheville, N.C; three grandchildren; and a special canine friend, Bunky.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by the Rev. David Stewart and the Rev. Billy Batten. Interment will follow in the Oleander Memorial Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Richardson, Floren Grindstaff, Harry Smith, Jim Kelly and Willie Cahoun. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the mortuary.
