GEORGE H. PARKER JR.

George Hinson Parker Jr., a former commonwealth's attorney of Franklin and Southampton County, died March 4, 1997. He was 86 and the widower of Brooks Johnson Parker.

Mr. Parker, a native of Franklin, was a graduate of Duke University and the University of Virginia Law School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired with the rank of lieutenant commander. He was the founding partner of the law firm of Parker, Clark & Parker. He was elected commonwealth's attorney of Franklin and Southampton County in 1952 and re-elected in 1956. He declined to seek re-election in 1960. He was a member and former chairman of the official board of the High Street United Methodist Church and served many years as chairman of the church's board of trustees. He was former president of the Franklin Rotary Club, former president of Hunterdale Ruritan Club, past district governor of the Holland District, Ruritan National, and former president of Franklin Southampton Bar Association. He was a lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, and received the Silver Beaver Award in 1958.

He is survived by two sons, George H. Parker III of Williamsburg, Judge Westbrook J. Parker of Franklin; two grandchildren, Westbrook J. Parker Jr. and Caroline B. Parker.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Poplar Spring Cemetery by the Rev. Edward C. Johnson and the Rev. A.D. Goodson. Memorial donations may be made to the James L. Camp Jr. YMCA, 300 Crescent Drive, Franklin, Va. 23851 or High Street United Methodist Church, 301 W. First Ave., Franklin, Va. 23851. Wright Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
