ARBA S. GODWIN

Arba Savage Godwin, 94, of Center Grove Road, died March 4, 1997, in Guardian Care Nursing Home.

Born in Bertie County, N.C., he was a retired farmer and merchant. He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie, as a lifetime deacon, chairman of the board of trustees and men's Bible class Sunday school teacher for 54 years. He was one of the first members of Ahoskie Rotary Club, serving as president from 1948-1949, and he had a 37-year perfect attendance record. Mr. Godwin was a 1984 recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow.

Survivors include his wife, Lela Jones Godwin; two daughters, Mary Ann Godwin Umphlett of Ahoskie, Kathryn Louise Godwin Taylor of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Arba Sherwood Godwin of Goldsboro, N.C.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie. Memorial donations may be made to Roanoke Chowan Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, N.C., 27910 or Center Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 826 Center Grove Road, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Mary Ann Umphlett on Forest Drive, Ahoskie. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
