ROY NAMED CHAIRMAN OF CENIT BANK'S GREAT BRIDGE COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD: James A. Roy, a senior partner with the law firm of Roy, Laine, Larsen, Romm & Lascara, was named chairman of Cenit Bank's Great Bridge community advisory board. The board, formed last month, will advise the bank on trends in the local business community. HAMPTON ROADS

CONDO/HOMEOWNER ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT COMPANY EARNS TOP INDUSTRY DESIGNATION: United Property Associates, which provides management services to more than 75 condominium and homeowner associations throughout the Hampton Roads area, was selected as an Accredited Association Management Company by Community Associations Institute. AAMC is the highest national designation for association management companies. United Property has offices in Virginia Beach and Newport News.

MARCH COAL LOADINGS SURGE 16 PERCENT: Coal shipments through the port of Hampton Roads surged in March, nearly erasing the effect of a slow January and February on the port's coal tonnage figures, according to the Hampton Roads Maritime Association. Loadings at the region's three coal terminals rose 16 percent to 5.5 million tons in March from 4.7 million a year ago. Through the first quarter of 1997, the port has shipped 13.7 million tons of coal, down less than 1 percent from the 13.8 million tons in 1996's first quarter.

FRENCH PORT OFFICIALS VISIT HAMPTON ROADS: Officials from the port of Le Havre in France are visiting the port of Hampton Roads this week. They're here to promote good relations between the ports, which have a cooperative agreement. Hampton Roads is the second largest U.S. port after New York for shipping to and from Le Havre, France's biggest port and one of Europe's largest. HAMPTON

LAYNE APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF GREAT ATLANTIC: Aubrey L. Layne Jr., formerly executive vice president, was named president of Great Atlantic Property Management. In addition to directing operational and administrative functions, he will be responsible for new business development.

SWAIN APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF ADVEX: Ronald A. Swain, a former engineering manager for Newport News Shipbuilding, was appointed president of Advex, a Virginia-based corporation specializing in supplies and services in the areas of precision machining, nuclear services, marine and industrial, fabricating and non-destructive testing. SENTARA AMONG TOP 100 INTEGRATED HEALTH SYSTEMS IN U.S.: Sentara Health System ranks No. 36 among America's top 100 integrated health systems according to St. Anthony Publishing, a leading provider of health care information. Sentara's score was based on a comparison of several key business factors including size, number of covered lives, provider arrangements, inpatient admissions, outpatient visits, hospital beds and affiliated doctors. St. Anthony has identified a total of 650 integrated systems in the United States.

PENNSYLVANIA FIRM WINS PATENT INJUNCTION AGAINST NORFOLK COMPANY: New Pig Corp. announced Wednesday that a U.S. District Court judge in Norfolk entered a patent injunction against Clark Products Co. Inc. of Norfolk. The judge also ordered Clark Products to pay Tipton, Pa.-based New Pig damages of $17,895.50, New Pig said. The court decided that a Clark Products dike product infringed on a patent New Pig holds for its Spillblocker brand of barrier containment devices, used at hog farms to contain sewage and other spills, New Pig said. Clark Products could not be reached for comment Wednesday. VIRGINIA

JOHN KLUGE BUYS STAKE IN PHP HEALTHCARE: John W. Kluge, chairman of Metromedia International Group Inc., has acquired approximately 800,000 shares of PHP Healthcare Corp. common stock, representing approximately 7.3 percent of outstanding stock. In addition to open-market purchases, PHP Healthcare sold 200,000 shares to Kluge at $13 per share in a private transaction, subject to registration rights. Charles H. Robbins, retired chairman and founder of the company, also sold 300,000 shares to Kluge and used part of the proceeds to repay outstanding obligations to PHP. PHP Healthcare Corp. is based in Reston.

GENERAL DYNAMICS DECLARES DIVIDEND: General Dynamics Corp. declared a regular quarterly dividend of 41 cents per share on the company's common stock, payable Aug. 15, 1997, to shareholders of record July 18, 1997. General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, designs and manufactures nuclear submarines, surface combatant ships and combat systems.
