ODU ADDS CLIFF JONES, A DUQUESNE TRANSFER

Old Dominion's basketball team has added a transfer to its ranks as Cliff Jones has announced he will attend ODU next year.

Jones, a 6-foot-7 small forward, averaged 5.9 points and 15.7 minutes per game last season as a freshman at Duquesne, including three starts for the 9-18 Dukes. As a transfer he will have to sit out next season and then will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Jones came to Duquesne from Pleasantville (N.J.) High School, which he helped lead to a pair of New Jersey Group II state titles in 1995 and '96. As a senior he averaged 19.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists on a team that included Rob Strickland and Jamar Perry of ODU's CAA-rival James Madison.

Jones joins three other ODU newcomers. The Monarchs signed guard Michael Williams and forward Paul Reed in the early signing period, and rising sophomore guard Brett Harper attended Old Dominion last year but was not able to participate in practice after transferring from Hagerstown (Md.) after spending just one year at the junior college.

Barring academic problems or defections among the eight returning players, the Monarchs have one scholarship remaining.
