Four colorful species of fish recently showed up in their normal springtime haunts, much to the delight of the area's anglers.

Redears, also known as shellcracker, made a strong showing on Lake Prince and Western Brance Reservoir in Suffolk.

James Worrell of Suffolk earned 30 citations for big shellcracker pulled from two impoundments. His biggest went 1 pound, 7 ounces. Fishing crony Wayne Walker of Suffolk had 20 citation winners to 1-2.

Red drum provided excitement for anglers along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the surf of Smith Island on the Eastern Shore and at Hatteras Inlet on the North Carolina Outer Banks.

Black drum appeared off Cape Charles and Kiptopeke and around the islands of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Meanwhile, Joe Henderson of Virginia Beach took the gray trout lead in the annual Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament with a 10-8 catch at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.

Second went to Laura Hansen of Suffolk at 9-3 amd third to Cathy Worrell of Chesapeake at 4-4. Carter had the lunker at 3-11.
