SAILOR'S DEATH MAY HAVE BEEN HIT-AND-RUN

The death of a 22-year-old man whose body was discovered near a westbound entrance to Route 44 Saturday morning is being investigated as a hit-and-run accident, state police said.

The body of Brian L. Bauman, 22, a sailor stationed aboard the carrier Enterprise, was discovered by a police officer about 2:40 a.m. The officer, who was riding a motorcycle, found Bauman lying about 300 feet east of Parks Avenue, said Tammy Van Dame, state police spokeswoman.

Van Dame said police were investigating a van that was stopped about 2:45 a.m. with recent front-end damage.

State police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call 424-6800. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENT TRAFFIC FATALITY
