HATTERAS STUDENTS HONORED: Eighth-graders from Cape Hatteras School traveled to Raleigh recently to present some of their research projects to the North Carolina Teacher Academy Board of Trustees.

They also showed their research to the North Carolina Joint Education Committee and Sen. Marc Basnight, D-Dare.

Basnight summoned Senate leaders from committee meetings on the final day of the budget discussions to see the display. They then were asked to make a presentation to Gov. Jim Hunt.

The research projects created by the Cape Hatteras students are unusual, thanks to teachers Annette O'Neal and Ann McArthur.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requires that eighth-graders complete a research project in language arts and another project that researches an environmental issue in North Carolina.

The teachers combined the two projects, having the students produce a research paper and a multi-media presentation.

The students worked for nine weeks preparing their papers and computer-generated presentations.

Ten students were selected to travel to Raleigh. Keturi Delong presented her multimedia project ``Pollution on the Neuse River'' to Basnight and Hunt. Other students traveling to Raleigh were Katie Brown, Thomas Midgett, Frankie Hopkins, Amanda Switzer, Lindsey White, Christinia Ballance, Barry Crum, and Cena Meekins.
