WEEKEND FISHING

Recent fishing action featured the season's first white marlin release for a Virginia boat and new leaders in the cobia, shark, spadefish and dolphin divisions of the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament.

The big news for North Carolina anglers was the appearance of schools of bigeye tuna off Oregon Inlet, where several in excess of 200 pounds were boated.

The white marlin was released Wednesday by Mike Glaubke of Virginia Beach, fishing on the Water Witch 98 miles southeast of Rudee Inlet.

Mike Maslow of Chesapeake took the Virginia contest's cobia lead with a 52-pounder boated at Bluefish Rock on the Tide Runner.

Jim Baylor of Norfolk gained the tournament's shark lead with a 322-pound mako caught off Virginia Beach on the Wahoo, while Johnny Zaun of Virginia Beach gained the spadefish lead with a 9-pound, 9-ounce catch from the Saltatrix at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Barry Logan of Woodbridge, Va., is the new leader in the dolphin category with a 37-pound catch from the Poor Girl. In addition, William B. Tramel of Kinder, Va., entered the contest's first yellowfin tuna, an 87-pounder caught from the Miss Behavin.
