OLA M. HART

Ola Mae Hart of the 500 block of Maryland Ave. died June 29, 1997, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Charlotte, N.C., Ms. Hart had lived in Norfolk for more than 30 years during which time she was a district manager for Avon and a sales representative for Hofheimer. She began her career in sales at an early age and was one of the first African-Americans to become manager of a store in Charlotte.

She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Norfolk, where she served with the Moses Reid Usher Board. Throughout her life, she was devoted to helping others, whether family or friends. The courage and dignity she displayed during her illness was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Survivors include a son, Torrance ``Terry'' Hart of Norfolk; mother, Mrs. Maybell Hart of Charlotte; four sisters, Ms. Louise Stewart, Ms. Dorothy Johnson, Mrs. Peggy Howey and Ms. Rosa Hart of Charlotte; six brothers, Attorney James C. Hart Jr. of Omaha, Neb., Dr. Charles Hart of Chesapeake, Bobby L. Hart, Larry Hart, George Hart of Chesapeake and Milton Dean Hart of Charlotte; a brother-in-law, Joe Howey Jr. of Charlotte; four sisters-in-law, Ms. Rita Hart of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Wilhelmina Hart and Mrs. Queenie Hart of Charlotte and Dr. Shirley Alexander Hart of Chesapeake; a special cousin, Ms. Rosa Lee Clark of Washington, D.C.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Ms. Hart was preceded in death by her father, James C. Hart Sr. and a brother, Joe Franklin Hart.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Mount Zion Baptist Church, 900 Middlesex St., Norfolk, by the Rev. Dr. Charles Hart. Interment will be Saturday in York Memorial Park, Charlotte. Metropolitan Funeral Service is in charge. The body will lie in state from noon until 3 p.m. at the church the day of the funeral. The family will receive friends at 528 Maryland Ave., Norfolk.
