JAMES E. BEATON JR.

James E. ``Red'' Beaton Jr. died Aug. 2, 1997, in a Norfolk hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Beaton was a native of Norfolk. He was predeceased by his parents, James E. Beaton Sr. and Bernice Fields Beaton, and a daughter, Mary Andrea Beaton. He was employed by The Virginian-Pilot newspaper for 50 years and six months. He retired in 1990. He was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church and the Loyal Order of the Moose Norfolk Lodge (NU)39.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Webb Beaton; a son, James E. ``Jeb'' Beaton III and his wife, Nancy Wrenn Beaton of Yorktown; two sisters, Ruth Beaton Gardner and her husband, Donald of Memphis, Tenn., Shirley Beaton Polston of Chesapeake; two sisters-in-law, Mary Webb Zemany and her husband, Andrew of Norfolk, Violet Webb Coghill of Virginia Beach; and a loving family of several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

There will be a memorial service at Heritage United Methodist Church, 715 Baker Road, Virginia Beach, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. It was his wish that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 101 W. Plume St., Suite 6 A, Norfolk, Va. 23510, in loving memory of his daughter, Mary Andrea Beaton. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is in charge of arrangements.
