FARM FRESH STORE IN HAMPTON DAMAGED BY TWO-ALARM BLAZE

A two-alarm fire damaged a grocery store on Mercury Boulevard late Tuesday night, fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

The fire began about 9:40 p.m. at the Farm Fresh in the 2200 block of Mercury Blvd., said Rick Rickett, Fire Department spokesman. A second alarm was called just after 10 p.m., as the fire spread to the roof of the building.

Rickett said that firefighters had to evacuate the building when flames spread to the roof because they feared a collapse.

Firefighters from Newport News and Langley Air Force Base were called to the scene to help fight the blaze, which was under control by 11 p.m., he said.

Rickett said dispatchers were called by a clerk who reported the blaze in a room at the back of the store. There were no details on the cause of the blaze Tuesday night. KEYWORDS: FIRE
