GEORGE A. POWELL

George Alix Powell, 72, of 1400 block of N. High St. died Aug. 22, 1997, in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

A native of Southampton County, Va., and the son of the late Willie James Powell and Irene Gayle Powell, he was a member of Oakland Christian Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher of the Men's Class, former moderator, deacon and had served as Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of Chuckatuck and Cypress Ruritan Clubs, co-founder of the Triangle Hunt Club and a member of the Life Underwriters Association. Mr. Powell was a retired insurance agent of Southland Life Insurance Co. after 26 1/2 years and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and Korea.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Gwaltney Powell of Franklin; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila P. and Mark Morris of Suffolk; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Susie Powell of Suffolk, Brian Keith Powell of Columbia, Md.; three sisters, Julia Powell Pope and Lucille Powell Bangley of Suffolk, Mary L. Powell of Virginia Beach; a brother, Russell L. Powell Sr. of Franklin; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Harrell Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Rev. Mark Burns. Interment will be in Newman Memorial Cemetery and Oakland Christian Church. Friends may join the family in the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today and other times at the residence of Ronnie and Susie Powell, 4405 Foxwood Place.
