ARGUMENT AT NIP JOINT LEADS TO SHOOTING

An argument between a man and a teen-ager at a nip joint Friday morning escalated into a shoot-out at a nearby playground in a South Suffolk neighborhood, police said.

Numerous shots were exchanged by Marvin L. Laury, 55, and a 16-year-old at the playground at Hunter Street and Dill Road just before noon, said Lt. W.M. Bunker. No bystanders were injured.

Laury, who lives in the 200 block of Charlotte Ave., was shot in the leg and pelvis, Bunker said. Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad took him to Obici Hospital, and he was then flown by Sentara Nightingale helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

He was in surgery late Friday, and his injuries did not appear to be life threatening, Bunker said.

Laury and the teen-ager, whose identity has not been released because he is a juvenile, had been arguing over the position of bicycles, Bunker said.

Laury fired numerous times with a shotgun, and the juvenile fired several times with a small caliber semi-automatic pistol, Bunker said. The shooting continued as the juvenile ran from the scene, he said.

No charges had been filed by late Friday. An investigation by detective E.C. Harris is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Harris at 925-6363 or Suffolk Crime Line at 539-1222.
