A GOOD DAY ON THE PIERS AND IN THE SURF

Pier fishing continued to be good along the Outer Banks Thursday.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught spot most of the day. A few Spanish mackerel and blue fish also were landed from the end of the pier.

Scattered Spanish mackerel weighing as much as four pounds and scattered bluefish were taken from the end of Avalon Pier during the morning. Fishermen caught spot two at a time throughout the afternoon.

Spot, Spanish mackerel, blues, pompano, sea mullet and croaker were taken on Nags Head Pier off and on during the day.

Jennette's Pier reported bluefish, bottom fish and albacore landed.

Scattered spot, mullet, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and an albacore were caught from Outer BanksPier. Quite a few undersized puppy drum were released.

South of Oregon Inlet, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier caught plenty of Spanish mackerel, lots of sea mullet and some keeper puppy drum weighing as much as 6 1/2 pounds. A 16-pound king mackerel also was decked.

A few Spanish mackerel were landed early in the morning on Avon Pier. Small flounder, spot and sea mullet were taken during the rest of the day.

Lots of spot, some nice flounder, a few mullet, small pompano and scattered puppy drum were landed on Frisco Pier.

Small bottom fish, tailor bluefish and some keeper flounder were taken Thursday by surfcasters along the northern beaches and around Oregon Inlet.

Plenty of 1- to 3-pound blues, some sea mullet, spot and puppy drum weighing as much as five pounds were beached in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Lots of bluefish and a few Spanish mackerel were landed at Cape Point. Some nice flounder were taken by anglers using live bait along the north beach. Pompano and flounder were caught by fishermen along the south beach.

Spanish mackerel and tailor blues were beached at Hatteras Inlet late Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday morning.

Blue water action off Oregon Inlet was good, with lots of nice yellowfin tuna weighing 40 to 60 pounds taken. The best action was between the 40630 and 40680 Loran lines. Scattered wahoo and dolphin also were landed.

Dolphin fishing and wahoo action were good off Hatteras. Fair numbers of tuna also were taken. Billfish were scare off both Oregon Inlet and Hatteras.

Pier and surf fishing should be good along the Dare coast during the weekend if winds continue from a northeasterly direction.

The water temperature was 71 degrees Thursday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 77 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island.
