JAN J. DEKKER

Jan J. Dekker, born in the Netherlands Jan. 11, 1927, died Oct. 12, 1997, after an illness.

He was educated in Amsterdam, served as an officer in the Dutch Army in Indonesia and worked for the Arabian American Oil Co. in Saudi Arabia. In 1956 he immigrated to the United States and worked for Brown and Root Construction Co., Texas. He was involved as a designer of bridges and tunnels in Louisiana and Virginia. Before retirement, he was a civil engineer and worked for 12 years as director of bridges and tunnels for C.S.X. Co., Jacksonville. He was pioneering, patriotic, proud, protective, providing, productive, wise, guiding and jovial. These are the few words we can use to describe Jan J. Dekker.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Dekker, and has departed to join God in his Holy Kingdom. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Madeleine F. Dekker; he is fondly remembered by his children, Wim Dekker and his wife, Sandra, Peter Dekker, Miriam Chapman and her husband, Robert, Anneliesje Brown and her husband, David, and Beatrix Elsasser; 11 grandchildren; brother, Johan Dekker and his wife, Corry; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m Saturday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, by Fr. James Dorson. Interment will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
