A NEW FALL COAT

Capt. Wayland Baum, 93, a native of Wanchese and a veteran Outer

Banks waterman for more than 60 years, spends Tuesday morning giving

his century-old Wanchese home a fresh coat of white paint. Baum, who

retired from charter fishing when he was 85, steadies himself with

scaffolding on his porch roof.
