FALLING TREE FATAL TO WORKER WHERE LAND BEING CLEARED

A worker was killed Friday afternoon when a tree he was cutting down fell on him, police said.

Roger R. Myatt, 39, of Sunset Drive, Chesapeake, was clearing a lot in Reed's Crossing, a new subdivision off the 1700 block of Holland Road, when the accident happened about 4 p.m., said Sgt. M.W. McKenzie.

Two co-workers for C&G Concrete of Chesapeake were nearby, one operating a backhoe and the other using a chipper, McKenzie said. Myatt was removing two oak trees, notching them to make them fall backward and avoid high tension wires, he said. After the first tree was cut, it leaned against the second, then fell on Myatt when the second one was cut, he said. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENT GENERAL FATALITY
