PTA FORUM TRIES TO GET PARENTS MORE INVOLVED WITH EDUCATION

Bill Treadwell is a believer in parental involvement.

He and his wife, Linda, started working on the PTA newsletter when their daughter was attending Independence Middle School. They gradually grew more involved in their school and citywide PTA.

And this summer, Treadwell was the second man ever elected president of the Virginia Beach Council of PTAs.

Treadwell and others active with the citywide PTA and the school division's Office of Guidance Services are taking the parenting message forward with their fifth annual conference Saturday, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., at Princess Anne High School. The event, titled ``Children, Our Stars of the Future: Let's Help Them Shine,'' is free and open to the public. Child care will be provided for 4- to 12-year-olds.

Participants will have a chance to attend two 40-minute sessions on a variety of topics such as homework strategies, teaching children responsibility, and anorexia, bulimia and self-esteem in teen-age girls. Attendance in each workshop will be limited, so early arrival and registration is encouraged.

Adolph Brown, a nationally known speaker who recently attended the President's Summit on volunteerism, will be the keynote speaker. His topic will be ``Motivating Your Child.''

For the first time, the workshops will be held on a Saturday. Treadwell said the citywide PTA and Office of Guidance Services hope more people will be able to attend on a weekend, and that parents come away with new skills and information that will help them and their children.
