In fact, many say last night went even better than expected... with lights remaining on and phones in working order.

Like other local governments in western Virginia, Roanoke County opened its emergency operations center... but there were few phone calls and no reports of trouble related to the Y2K bug.

(uh-lid-ee-uh) Alydia Arnold became the first baby born in the year 2-thousand in the Roanoke Valley.
Alydia made her debut just 14 minutes into the New Year.
Her mother Katrina had been in labor since Wednesday -- before having a c-section.
Katrina says she was concerned about Y2K problems at the hospital but still wanted to be the first to deliver.

In Fairfax-- twins were born in different millenniums.
A woman gave birth to a girl at 11- fifty two last night, making her one of the last Virginians born in the 1900's.

Today, African Americans in Roanoke and across the nation celebrated the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

In the early 1900's organizations like the NAACP fought to stop lynchings-- several decades later Martin Luther King would lead the March on Washington.

And at the center of the impeachment process were two southwest Virginia Congressmen -- Republican Bob Goodlatte and Democrat Rich Boucher -- both serving on the house judiciary committee.
Democrat Virgil Goode of Rocky Mount became one of five democrats in the nation to cross party lines voting for impeachment.
And this year also marked a historic moment for Republicans in the Virginia Assembly.
Election 99 -- ended with Republicans in control of every branch of state government -- ending a century of democratic dominance in the House of Delegates.

It's been a difficult year for two textile companies in our area.
Most recently, Tultex filed chapter 11 bankruptcy and laid off 11-hundred people in Martinsville and Henry County.
And Pluma also had its share of problems -- which eventually led the company to go out of business in September.
Company wide 950 people were laid off -- 375 of those from Martinsville.
