Fire officials say a motorist backed into a gas line around three thirty, igniting the fumes.
At one point-- witnesses say flames were 25- feet in the air.
Nearby homes and apartments were evacuated as a precaution.
Resident were allowed to return about 30- minutes later-- once the gas company was able to shut the line off.
No one was injured.

Another anthrax scare- this time at a Richmond homeless shelter that shares space with a Planned Parenthood office-


The Daily Planet shelter in Richmond got a letter threatening it contained anthrax spores yesterday.
A similar letter was received at Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge in Roanoke, and 18 other offices across the country.
Both Virginia letters are being tested by the F-B-I lab.
Six others turned out to be a hoax.

The Roanoke Express moved into first place in the Northeast division with a 4 to 2 win over Huntington.

The Virginia Cavaliers opened play in the A-C-C tonight hosting 7-th ranked Duke at University Hall.

The New Orleans Saints cleaned house firing head coach Mike Ditka, his assistant coaches and the general manager.

The 60 year old Ditka, who won a Super Bowl in Chicago in 1986, said the decision was clear cut and he didn't fight it.

St. Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner received the N-F-L's highest honor today.

Well, today Warner was named the National Football League's Most Valuable player.
Warner, the only player other than Dan Marino to throw forr 40 touchdowns in a season, led the St. Louis Rams to the N-F-C's beat record.
He completed 325 of 499 passes for over 43-hundred yards and 41 touchdowns.
The Rams have a bye week before playing in the N-F-L playoffs.
