Martinsville's economy is once again socked by Tultex.
The apparel company is laying off all the production workers it had left in this country ... about 300 people.

Tultex says it's going to stop making fleece in Martinsville.
Tultex would not say why the layoffs came today -- or if they're part of the company's restructuring plan.
Last month, Tultex laid off 11-hundred workers when it filed for Chapter-11 bankruptcy protection.
Those layoffs have made the city's unemployment rate skyrocket -- it's well above 15-percent ... by far, the highest in the state.

The high unemployment rate in Martinsville is in sharp contrast with the record lows reported just an hour north in the Roanoke area.
The latest numbers in the Roanoke Region put the unemployment rate at an all-time low of one-point-six percent.

6-year-old Cuban boy should return to his homeland to be with his
father. Elian's mother drowned with 10 others, all of them fleeing
Cuba. But Elian survived, rescued after two days of floating in an
inner tube in the Florida straits. Too tough of a journey his family
says, only to have Elian loose his new found freedom to Cuba.
